Preliminary exercise: TikTok Music video

1) State the
song you have chosen for your preliminary exercise.

high fashion - Addison Rae

2) Choose at least three music videos similar to your concept and watch a clip or more from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene.

I like the different colours used on the different scenes
I like how the video paused when the title appeared
I like the grainy effect over the video
I like the clip where they kept zooming out away from her
I like the normal desaturated colours

I like the variety of close ups
I like the variety of speeds of the clips
I like how it cuts back to clips creating a narrative
I like the slow motion clips
I like how the smoke is used around her as a prop

I like the fast paced shots at the start
I like how the colours invert on themselves
I like how they have different shots of the band members dancing
I like how the camera doesn't move much but the actors do
I like how the camera is handheld in some parts

3) Write a short music video treatment for your extract (this is basically a script for your TikTok music video). You can find an example of a treatment here. If you are making your real coursework then feel free to use the treatment from your summer project.

There will be multiple scenes and clips put together after each other with fast cuts between them, the clips themselves will vary in pace depending on what part of the song it is. The lyrics will accompany the different clips on the screen in a cursive font, the lyrics will not just be at the bottom of the clips but will change location around the different objects in the clips and will cut in word by word when the song gets fast. When the song repeats "ide rather get" many times in a row the screen will be black with the lyrics on the screen that are transparent showing the clips in the background. In between these there will be a very quick clip of the scene that could be seen through the lyrics. During the slower parts of the song the clips will showcase different elements of fashion and from different time periods. This will offer nostalgia for older audiences and offer a sense of personal identity for all audiences. For example the makeup that the people in the music videos are wearing will vary, some of them will be wearing very colourful more recent makeup trends whereas some of them will be wearing a more timeless look. This may reinforce stereotypes about women and them being very interested in fashion. Similarly the music video will be mainly extreme close ups, close ups and medium shots of these makeup looks being done as well as the clothes that are worn and different shops. These shots may reinforce Mulvey's male gaze because they are very zoomed in so it could be seen as objectifying however it also subverts Mulvey's theory because it is more focused on the fashion elements. The shots will all have a handheld feel to them and will not be overly produced to give it an authentic feel and to match the chaos in the lyrics.

4) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing (in a music video you will find you need FAR more shots than you think, particularly close-ups). These additional shots can be close-ups, alternative angles or something more creative. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word/Google Docs to set out your shot list - you can find an example here (this is from narrative film making but the same format can be used for any video project)

SHOT LIST

Extreme close up
close up
medium close up
medium shot
long shot
establishing shot
Reverse shot
Over the shoulder shot
crane
tracking
High angle
Low angle

5) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre and style of your artist? Plan your settings, costume, make-up, props and lighting.

Lots of different shoes and clothing items that are on trend
Wired headphones
Pink Ipod
lots of makeup looks with heavy eyeliner and different eyeshadow looks
Different technology will be visible in the music video
Will add the lyrics onto the music video
Various different settings for example a phone booth

6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required, planned equipment and any other aspects you need to arrange.

Will film on friday afterschool and on saturday
I will film in bedrooms and bathroom mirrors
Makeup products
Film shops and clothes out in London
