We met the brief but we could have used more match on action. I learnt how to film and edit together match on action, how to use different effects like fades and dissolves and also how to fade sound in and out to fit some clips.
4) What were the strengths and weaknesses of your final film? Write a detailed analysis picking out specific shots, edits and any other aspect of film language you think is relevant.
I think that the mise en scene was very good and fit the situation and the music very well. For example the festive costumes clearly showed who the characters were and help establish a plot making it easier for the viewer to understand what is happening in a short amount of time. I think the parallel sound went very well with the clips for example the plain bells that got louder as Mrs Claus sat down, and the fast paced Christmas music as the elf throws away his to do list. I think that the use of fades and dissolves was also good and help establish a timeline - for example when the elf has a flashback to her sleeping instead of making gifts the dissolve helps make it clear to the audience that the time has changed. I think that there could have been more match on action and more development in the plot because I think that it ends too abruptly. I also think that the sound at times was quite loud and the quality of some of the clips were not that great like the news introduction scene. Sometimes the setting would change in some scenes for example the random Ipad that shows up on the table or the girl in the back.
5) Learner response: what aspect of editing did you find most difficult? What have you learned from this process that will help you when you start the actual coursework later this year
I found that the match on action and getting sounds right is the most difficult for me to do. Filming the clips again from different angles whilst trying to make it look the same was quite difficult because in the moment it looks perfect but then when you try and edit it you realise that something was not in the right place or you did not film it right. To avoid this in my coursework I will film clips multiple times even if I think that the clip looked find just in case. I will also try and use two phones when filming match on action so that editing it and finding the perfect place to cut between the two clips becomes easier. With the sound I found that there was often a lot of background noise or sometimes the music drowned out the speech. To avoid this issue in my coursework I will film somewhere quiet and make sure there is no noise in the background. When I edit I will make sure to fade some parts of my non diegetic sound so that you can hear what is going on in the scene. If there is background sound that is not needed in a scene I will mute it as well.
