Cinematography

Clueless - The opening overhead shot of the teenagers packed in the car shows how close they are and creates a sense of friendship between them. The medium shot of the girl shopping connotes that she is a teenager and reinforces the stereotype that teenage girls find enjoyment in shopping. Her expensive clothing style connotes that she is wealthy and comes from a rich background. The fast paced montage that follows with high key lighting and parallel upbeat sound to compliment the happy party scenes with the girl and her friends put the audience in her life and allows them to experience to energetic and chaotic life that she does. The wide shot of the girl getting ready at her huge vanity clearly demonstrates how she cares about her appearance and takes pride in it once again reinforcing traditional teenage girl stereotypes. This is further reinforced through the gold, white and pink colours of her room which are associated with femininity and wealth. The medium shot of her choosing her outfit on her computer could present the girl as smart and good with technology which is the preferred reading but the girl could also be seen as spoiled unable to choose her own clothes which is the oppositional reading. The high angle of the dad walking down the stairs as the maid runs away clearly presents the maid as scared of the dad and the angle helps to communicate her inferiority. The camera pans as the girl follows her dad with orange juice to show the girls caring nature which is contrasted with her dads coldness.

Criminal minds - The long shot establishes the setting and the characters withing it. You can clearly see the verbal code of the mans jacket which says coroner clearly demonstrating that someone has died. They are not in the centre of the frame and are towards the side so they are not the main focus in this scene or important characters for the plot. The man that is stood up pointing at the yellow tarp creates an action code and suggests that something is about to happen. The man lifting up the tarp has a distressed expression and creates an enigma code. The shot clearly  cuts off the rest of the tarp so that we are unable to see what is under it or the shape of it to create a sense of mystery and an enigma code. The lighting is low key creating dark shadows which set the ominous tone and creates tension. The lighting around the two main characters is bright suggesting they are going to unveil the truth as they lift the tarp.
