1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film:
The clip uses Diegetic sound such as the girl running into the elevator, the people talking to each other (dialogue) and the elevator bell and the doors opening which makes the audience feels as though it is a real office. The music coming from the headphones shows what the woman can hear so is diegetic sound. The sound can be parallel as it is calming and they are not doing much however it could be contrapuntal as well because of the mans initial facial expression which looks sad and the costumes which are very dull shades of grey and brown which do not match how upbeat the music is. However as his his facial expression becomes happier after the two people talk the music becomes parallel as the upbeat music matches how he feels. The sound effect of the elevator bell is an example of foley sound but is diegetic.
Extension/additional task
A clockwork Orange
Non diegetic sound - The voiceover
Non diegetic sound - The background music
The upbeat comical background music is an example of contrapuntal sound because it does not match what is happening in the scene. Since the voiceover is the main character the contrapuntal sound highlights how strange his thoughts are and how he views him hurting his friends and funny and entertaining.
Life on mars
Diegetic sound- The car doors shutting and the sound of the cars
Non diegetic - The background music
Sound bridge - The sound of the car skidding continuing from one scene to the next
The contrapuntal background music does not fit in with the car chase scene and highlights how comedic it is however at some points like when the man is stuck in the goal the background music is parallel as it is comedic.
Funny games
Diegetic sound - The classical music
Non diegetic sound - The heavy metal music
At first the background music is parallel as it is calm just like a normal family and highlights their class however towards the end the sound becomes contrapuntal and may foreshadows what will happen in the movie.
Once upon a time in the west
There is lots of diegetic sound like the sound of the fly buzzing and the chair rocking.
There is a sound bridge of the sound of the train passing whilst the scene changes as well as the continuous sound of the creaking in the background which could mirror how boring and repetitive life is in the west.
Once upon a time in America
non diegetic sound is used as the phone rings throughout the clip acting as a sound bridge tying all the scenes together seamlessly however it becomes diegetic which could mirror the confusion and hallucinations that the man is experiencing.

What effects are created by the lighting in each image? Note: if the images don't display correctly in your blog then simply use the number of each image and answer the three questions for each. Lowkey lighting Top lighting This creates a femme fatale effect as it accentuates her facial features High key lighting Under lighting Creates the effect that the man is powerful as it adds shadows below his eyes and face making him looking grimacing Low key lighting Top lighting This highlights the mans face and contrasts him with the darkness of his background which presents him as an authority figure and emphasises his power high key lighting Under lighting This creates a shadow
Parallel sound is used at first because the upbeat music compliments the happy and party scenes whereas at the end contrapuntal sound is used which contrasts the sad scenes
