1) Still image analysis
Look at the still images on slides 33-37 of the Film Language Powerpoint linked above. Copy the images into your blog and answer the following questions for each image:
- Identify examples of high and low-key lighting.
- Say which depict top, back or under lighting.
- What effects are created by the lighting in each image?
Note: if the images don't display correctly in your blog then simply use the number of each image and answer the three questions for each.

Creates the effect that the man is powerful as it adds shadows below his eyes and face making him looking grimacing

This highlights the mans face and contrasts him with the darkness of his background which presents him as an authority figure and emphasises his power

This creates a shadow behind the woman which could suggest that she is hiding something

This makes them blend into the environment which could be showing how connected they are

This creates shadows on the ground before them which makes them seem unearthly and alien

Creates shadows behind the girl and under her eyes to highlight her fear

Highlights the mans face and adds shadows beneath his face on his neck

This creates a silhouette effect on the man which creates the enigma code of who is he and what is he doing

Top lighting
This creates shadows beneath the mans face which may create the impression that he has a hidden agenda
2) Film noir research
Research film noir - focusing on the genre’s distinctive lighting style. Make notes on the genre and particularly the use of lighting - bullet points are fine.
- High contrast harsh lighting creates a sense of isolation and mystery
- Chiaroscuro creates a sense of tension and danger
- Lowkey lighting
- Dark and cynical themes
- Crime plots
3) Film noir YouTube clip analysis
Finally, find a YouTube clip that fits the film noir genre and embed it under your research (the clip can be classic noir from the 1950s or something more recent - neo-noir). How does the clip's lighting fit the film noir genre?
