Mise-en-scene blog tasks

 1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.

The long shot of the man looking down at the garden from his balcony highlights his power over everyone stood in the garden. The way he is looking down makes it seem that he is proud of whatever happened in the garden, it looks like he is enjoying the chaos. Costume: The man is wearing a robe which connotes comfort and relaxation, this idea contrasted with the chaos below him might highlight how he is enjoying it. Lighting: the bright day time lighting could show how a new day has started and could symbolise new begginings for the man. Actor placement; The man is in the centre of the image which could show how he owns the house or is responsible for the chaos that he has caused. Props: the rubbish strewn around the garden can highlight how the man is in a position to disregard his house and not take care of it implying that he is wealthy, it could also show how his life is overwhelming as there is a lot of stuff around him. Setting: the garden looks dull and the grass looks dead which could symbolise how nobody takes care of it or how whatever happend there before destroyed the life of the garden.

2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blogpost and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

The long shot of the elevevator could represent how the two are not close, the switch from the long shot to a more medium shot of the two as the elevator doors close could signify the space being more confined but could also represent that the two have become closer. It stays a medium shot until the elevator doors open again and then returns back to a long shot which could represent how the conversation changed the mans life and caused him to think in a new way just like how he is on a new floor, this is symbollic of his life. The plain background draws more attention to the characters themselves. They are both in office attire which implies that they work together. Originally the mans facial expression is very serious but this then shifts as soon as the woman compliments the song. This clearly highlights how talking to her makes him happier. The dim lighting creates an intimate atmosphear and could connote the start of a love story.

The initial long shot of the man almost manically moving in one place clearly contrasts the calm and collected women sat at the table, this contrast may have been used to highlight how "crazy" the man is acting. The low angle shot of the man on the floor and the woman talking to him makes it seems as though the man is powerless compared to the woman and that she has defeated him, this is further reinforced by the mans head in his hands. The bright lighting could suggets how everything is coming to light and could symbolise how the truth is being revealed. The close up of the man as he hits the glass places emphasis on the mans stupidity.
